‘Best small retailer’ and ‘Newcomer’.
We have been confirmed as finalists for the Farm Shop & Deli Awards in the ‘Best small retailer’ and ‘Newcomer’ category. The high standard of competition within each of our categories means reaching the final is an amazing achievement, and one that we are absolutely delighted with. We're off to the awards show on 16th April at the NEC in Birmingham. Well done team.
As I write this, Spring still seems a long way away. The Beast from the East caused mayhem and panic countrywide but The Smiddy only had to close for one day. We had panic buying of bread, milk, eggs and snow shovels the minute we reopened but spending has now resumed at normal levels. The snow is falling again today and temperatures are low and all anyone wants to do is snuggle up by the fire and keep warm. However, I am hopeful that by the time this is read, sunshine will have appeared and all the spring flowers will be cheering us up.
The Smiddy has been busy getting painted and finished off inside since our last newsletter. The road into The Smiddy has now been tarmacked so it is a smoother surface on approach. There were a lot of things that we didn’t quite get finished before we opened but all snagging has now been done. The café especially benefited from a lick of paint after all the human traffic that have been through the doors. Afternoon Tea at The Smiddy has taken off well and Carrie, our baker, will be kept busy. We have a some new members of staff in the café and they are doing really well. We have Lachlan from Kippen, Jolanda from Holland (she now lives in Aberfoyle-not too big a commute!) and Sophie from Dunblane.
As usual, our Butchery is doing well. Stewart is off to Belfast on 20th March for The World Butchers’ Challenge so we wish him all the very best of luck there. The Butchers’ Bundle – a new weekly event at our Butchery has really taken off. For £20 the boys put in several different items each week. Speaking for myself, it’s taken all the stress out of meal planning!
Our kitchen under the watchful eye of Dave, the head chef, has been producing fabulous ready meals for our Smiddy Freezer (just beside the deli counter) and also jams, dressings and chutneys that can be found in the shop.
The shop has some lovely new products in and has already seen a very successful Valentine’s Day and is now prepared for Mothering Sunday and then Easter. We try to keep everyone’s attention with exciting and different items throughout the year. The Smiddy looks forward to seeing you soon!
